Ysgol Derwenfa

Ysgol Derwenfa serves a rural area and is in the county of Flintshire for administrative purposes. At the age of 11 the children are transferred to Ysgol Castell Alun, Hope or Ysgol Alun, Mold but parents may opt for St. Richard Gwyn School, Flint, for religious reasons, or they may choose Ysgol Maes Garmon, Mold, for Welsh linguistic reasons.

The school is a semi-open plan, co-educational day school, which was opened in 1979, after the old County Primary and Church Schools which had served the community for nearly a century, closed.   The school day begins with an act of corporate worship and a period of time each week is devoted to Religious Education but arrangements can be made for exemption from Religious Instruction and attendance at Assemblies where other arrangements will be made for the pupils.
Parents who have strong religious convictions who prefer their children not to participate in Christmas Concerts, Christmas Parties, sponsorships, taking raffle tickets home for parents to sell should contact the head teacher.

In the past all the Infant classes were single age groups. Three years ago we established an Early Years Unit comprising of Nursery and Reception pupils. This year we will continue with this arrangement but owing to pupil numbers the Unit will include a single nursery class as well as a mixed age Reception / Year 1 class (comprising of the younger Year 1 children). The other class will be a year 1/2 mixed class (comprising of the older Year 1 children).  The Junior classes are a mixed year 3 / 4 and mixed year 5 / 6 and one single age Year 4 class. The mixed age classes in K.S 2 are determined by the ability of the pupils taking into consideration N.C. levels and test results and the need to keep all classes under 30.

Attention is given to the core subjects on an individual or group tuition basis.  The foundation subjects are either integrated into the curriculum through the study of different topics or as separate subjects when the need arises, taking into consideration the age, stage of development of the pupils and the attainment targets laid down in the National Curriculum.

Children experiencing learning difficulties are supported by the school Additional Learning Needs teacher twice a week.   If the difficulties are of a more serious nature, the child/children will be referred to the Educational Psychologist so that a statement can be compiled. Additional Needs Team Meetings are convened twice a year during which the difficulties/progress of the pupils on the Additional Needs register is discussed and minutes kept. Representatives from outside agencies i.e. educational psychologist, school nursing sister, high school, etc. are also invited to the meetings. Where the learning difficulties are of a more serious nature, arrangements are made for a member of the learning Inclusion Team to come to school to work on a one to one basis with the particular pupil/s. During open evenings parents are informed of their pupil’s progress. As part of the Special Needs Code of Practice parents are kept informed either by the class teacher, Additional Needs Coordinator or Headteacher of the different stages and implications of the Code of Practice.

Although English is the medium of instruction and the normal vehicle of communication, yet in accordance with the National Curriculum, Welsh is taught as a foundation subject.   All class teachers teach Welsh as a Second language to their own class.   Children who opt for Welsh Comprehensive education are given extra Welsh lessons by the Area teacher during the summer term prior to transfer.

The main aims of the school are:

  • To create and maintain an environment and atmosphere which is caring and stable, where pupils can develop as confident individuals aware of the needs of others as responsible members of the society
  • To provide the highest possible quality of education which reflects the needs of individual pupils, and the opportunities for pupils to achieve their potential in particular with relation to numeracy and literacy, which is the responsibility of all staff.
  • To establish a happy, hard working atmosphere based on sound interpersonal relationships between pupils, staff, governors and parents.

Having said this, we endeavor not to divorce ourselves from the main aim of the school, which is to provide a pleasant and secure environment, where children are encouraged to develop as individuals as well as acquiring a sensitivity to the needs of others. We firmly believe that each child must be happy, because if they are happy, then everything else has a greater chance of slotting into place

Website:http://www.derwenfa-pri.flintshire.sch.uk/Mae Ysgol Derwenfa’n gwasanaethu ardal wledig ac mae hi’n rhan o Sir y Fflint i bwrpasau gweinyddol. Yn 11 oed, mae’r plant yn trosglwyddo i Ysgol Castell Alun, Yr Hôb neu Ysgol Alun, Yr Wyddgrug ond gall y rhieni ddewis Ysgol Sant Richard Gwyn, Y Fflint, am resymau crefyddol, neu Ysgol Maes Garmon, Yr Wyddgrug, am resymau ieithyddol Cymraeg.

Mae hon yn ysgol ddydd gydaddysgol, ar gynllun lled-agored, a agorwyd yn 1979 wedi i’r hen Ysgolion Eglwys a Chynradd Sirol gau ar ôl gwasanaethu’r gymuned am bron i ganrif. Mae’r diwrnod ysgol yn cychwyn gydag addoli ar y cyd ac mae cyfnod o amser bob wythnos ar gyfer Addysg Grefyddol ond gallwn wneud trefniadau i eithrio plant rhag mynd i’r gwersi crefyddol a’r gwasanaethau a gwneud trefniadau eraill iddynt. Dylai rhieni sydd ag argyhoeddiadau crefyddol cryfion ac a fyddai’n dewis peidio gadael i’w plant gymryd rhan mewn Cyngherddau Nadolig, Partïon Nadolig, gweithgareddau noddi, cymryd tocynnau raffl adref i’r rhieni eu gwerthu, gysylltu â’r pennaeth.

Yn y gorffennol roedd y dosbarthiadau babanod i gyd wedi’u grwpio’n oedrannau unigol. Dair blynedd yn ôl aethom ati i sefydlu Uned y Blynyddoedd Cynnar sy’n cynnwys y disgyblion Meithrin a Derbyn. Eleni byddwn yn parhau gyda’r drefn hon ond oherwydd nifer y disgyblion bydd yr Uned yn cynnwys un dosbarth meithrin yn ogystal â dosbarth Derbyn / Blwyddyn 1 oedran cymysg (yn cynnwys plant iau Blwyddyn 1). Bydd y dosbarth arall yn ddosbarth cymysg blwyddyn 1 / 2 (yn cynnwys plant hŷn Blwyddyn 1). Mae’r dosbarthiadau Iau yn ddosbarthiadau cymysg o flynyddoedd 3 / 4 a 5 /6 ac un dosbarth Blwyddyn 4. Mae’r dosbarthiadau oedran cymysg yng Nghyfnod Allweddol 2 wedi’u dewis yn ôl gallu’r disgyblion gan gymryd i ystyriaeth lefelau’r Cwricwlwm Cenedlaethol a chanlyniadau profion a’r angen i gadw’r holl ddosbarthiadau dan 30.

Mae’r pynciau craidd yn cael sylw trwy ddysgu grwpiau neu addysg unigol. Mae’r pynciau sylfaen naill ai wedi’u cyfuno â’r cwricwlwm drwy astudio gwahanol dopigau neu fel pynciau ar wahân pan fo’r angen yn codi, gan gymryd i ystyriaeth oedran a cham datblygiad y disgyblion a’r targedau cyrhaeddiad sydd wedi’u gosod yn y Cwricwlwm Cenedlaethol.

Mae plant sy’n cael anawsterau dysgu’n cael cefnogaeth athro Anghenion Dysgu Ychwanegol yr ysgol ddwywaith yr wythnos. Os yw’r anawsterau’n fwy difrifol, bydd y plentyn/plant yn cael eu cyfeirio at y Seicolegydd Addysg fel bod modd llunio datganiad. Mae’r Tîm Anghenion Ychwanegol yn cyfarfod ddwywaith y flwyddyn ac yn ystod y cyfarfod yma maent yn trafod anawsterau/cynnydd y disgyblion sydd ar y gofrestr Anghenion Ychwanegol ac yn cadw cofnodion. Gwahoddir cynrychiolwyr o gyrff allanol h.y. seicolegydd addysg, prif nyrs ysgol, ysgol uwchradd ac ati, i’r cyfarfodydd hefyd.

Lle mae’r anawsterau dysgu o natur fwy difrifol, gwneir trefniadau i aelod o’r Tîm Cynhwysiad Dysgu ddod i’r ysgol i weithio ar sail un-i-un gyda’r disgybl/ion penodol. Yn ystod nosweithiau agored mae’r rhieni’n cael clywed am gynnydd eu disgyblion. Yn rhan o’r Cod Ymarfer Anghenion Arbennig, mae’r rhieni’n cael clywed gan yr athro dosbarth, y Pennaeth neu’r Cydlynydd Anghenion Arbennig am wahanol gamau a goblygiadau’r Cod Ymarfer.

Er mai trwy gyfrwng y Saesneg y gwneir y dysgu a’r cyfathrebu fel arfer, yn unol â’r Cwricwlwm Cenedlaethol, dysgir y Gymraeg fel pwnc craidd. Mae’r athrawon dosbarth yn dysgu Cymraeg fel Ail iaith i’w dosbarthiadau eu hunain. Mae plant sy’n dewis addysg Gyfun Gymraeg yn derbyn gwersi Cymraeg ychwanegol gan athro Ardal yn ystod tymor yr haf cyn trosglwyddo.

Prif nodau’r ysgol yw:

  • Creu a chynnal amgylchedd ac awyrgylch sy’n ofalgar a sefydlog, lle gall disgyblion ddatblygu fel unigolion hyderus sy’n ymwybodol o anghenion pobl eraill fel aelodau cyfrifol o gymdeithas.
  • Darparu addysg o’r ansawdd gorau posib sy’n adlewyrchu anghenion disgyblion unigol, a chyfleoedd i ddisgyblion gyflawni eu potensial yn arbennig mewn perthynas â rhifedd a llythrennedd, sy’n gyfrifoldeb i’r staff i gyd.
  • Sefydlu awyrgylch o hapusrwydd ac o weithio’n galed wedi’i seilio ar berthynas ryngbersonol gadarn rhwng y disgyblion, y llywodraethwyr a’r rhieni.

Wedi dweud hynny, rydym yn ymdrechu i beidio ein gwahanu ein hunain oddi wrth brif nod yr ysgol, sef darparu amgylchedd braf a diogel, lle caiff y plant eu hannog i ddatblygu fel unigolion yn ogystal â dysgu bod yn sensitif i anghenion pobl eraill. Credwn yn gryf bod yn rhaid i bob plentyn fod yn hapus, oherwydd os ydynt yn hapus, mae gwell cyfle i bopeth arall lithro i’w lle.
